Joining Berenberg in 2009, Michael Kreibich spent a decade as a portfolio manager and product specialist, overseeing special mandates and mutual funds. In 2019, he became Head of Investment Consulting, responsible for strategic asset allocation for institutional investors.
After completing his banking apprenticeship, Kreibich earned qualifications as a Chartered Financial Analyst and Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst at the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management, where he now lectures on portfolio management and strategic asset allocation.
Since 2019, the Berenberg Investment Consulting team has been developing and implementing customized Strategic Asset Allocation (SAA) and Asset Liability Management (ALM) studies for the bank’s investment platform. Serving institutional investors, corporate pensions, single-family offices, endowments, and ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHNWIs), the team manages assets totaling approximately €40 billion.
The team continually enhances its in-house consulting infrastructure to deliver precise strategic advice. The platform’s system enables the swift preparation of tailor-made studies, highly valued by investors.
Berenberg’s latest advancement is a new SAA and ALM innovation hub. Its interactive dashboard elevates customer experience by enabling real-time collaboration with senior consultants to explore various asset allocations. The back-end engine simulates future asset and liability trajectories for the next 40+ years, providing key performance, risk, and balance sheet metrics.
A macro-economic stress scenario simulator, developed in collaboration with scientists from the University of Copenhagen, offers insights into tail risks that investors’ allocations may face. This tool allows precise modeling of scenarios significant to investors, such as equity market downturns combined with specific economic conditions and central bank policies.
The innovation hub assists in determining the asset allocation for corporate pension schemes’ defined contribution plans. It considers claims and regulatory requirements while maintaining a stable coverage ratio, minimizing risk exposure, and reducing the need for future capital injections from sponsoring companies.
A proprietary sustainability database provides insights into the carbon impact of potential portfolio configurations. Beyond ESG scores, a carbon-intensity tracker highlights transitional risks related to emission pricing and overall environmental footprint.
