Marginalen Bank earns this recognition for proving that specialist consumer finance can widen access without compromising prudence. Over almost 15 years, it has built a clear strategy around financial inclusion on fair terms, extending from near-prime consumers to SMEs and, increasingly, enterprise payments, while keeping products simple to understand and straightforward to access. Its underwriting differentiates it: rather than relying solely on out-of-the-box scorecards, the bank assesses a customer’s broader context, supporting responsible approvals and consistently sustaining credit losses of roughly 1–2 percent. Operationally, a major core-banking migration from a legacy monolith to a cloud-based platform was executed without customer disruption, and it now underpins a microservices architecture that accelerates digital servicing and improves customer dialogue. The modernised stack also strengthens resilience: scalable compute has lifted payment-processing capacity, reduced downtime and moved the bank towards the high-availability standards demanded by merchants and partners. Marginalen Bank’s ecosystem mindset is equally compelling. It is a significant enabler of Swedish instant payments, supporting Swish participation for 20–30 businesses and pioneering indirect access for other banks, alongside early launches of local account-to-account instant clearing. Through collaborations, including with a blockchain firm and an EIF-backed SME funding programme, it broadens access to rails and capital for underserved segments. This blend of inclusion, transparency-led culture and platform-led scalability positions it strongly for growth over the next 12–24 months.
