TMZ oversees eight industrial free zones surrounding Tangier port, where 40 percent of energy consumption comes from renewable sources. The aim is to make that 100 percent by 2030, via solar, hydro-electric and wind-farm generation. TMZ been certified under the Port Environmental Review System, and Tangier was the first in Africa to be awarded the “EcoPort” classification. The group’s environmental management programmes address water, air, and soil quality, and monitor waste and natural resource use. TMZ has established a partnership with the International Finance Corporation to support its transition towards full eco-industrial park status. It has implemented energy efficiency measures for public lighting, with LED fitments resulting in energy savings of up to 55 percent. Thousands of square metres of rooftops in the Tanger Automotive City are covered with photovoltaic solar panels for low-consumption technical equipment. TMZ views biodiversity preservation as a crucial preventative measure against global warming, and prioritises sustainable socio-economic development. The CFI.co judging panel presents Tanger Med Zones with the 2021 global award for Best Low-Carbon Free Zone Opportunities.
