Stanbic IBTC Bank PLC: Champion of Sustainability-Linked Finance West Africa 2026

Stanbic IBTC Bank PLC

In 2025, Stanbic IBTC Bank PLC facilitated ₦277.3bn in sustainable financing, more than tripling its ₦87.4bn target and representing approximately 9 percent of its loan portfolio. Allocations covered renewable energy, healthcare, climate-smart agriculture, sustainable trade, education, women-owned businesses and SME development.

Credit decisions incorporate the bank’s Environmental and Social Management System, aligned with the IFC Performance Standards, Equator Principles and Nigeria Sustainable Banking Principles. Environmental and social screening, climate-risk assessments, stress testing and ESG due diligence inform lending, particularly in sectors with heightened climate exposure. Sustainability and climate considerations also feature in enterprise risk management and executive performance metrics.

Smaller enterprises received ₦76.4bn in credit across 2,862 SMEs during 2025, supported by 1,811 financial-literacy sessions reaching 44,669 participants. Standard Bank Group, the Africa-focused financial-services group of which Stanbic IBTC is a member, provides its Sustainability Academy, an online learning platform covering ESG fundamentals, renewable energy, climate-smart agriculture, carbon markets and resource management. This combines capital provision with practical capacity-building for businesses facing reporting and governance constraints.

A naira-denominated $80m facility structured with IFC, the World Bank Group’s private-sector arm, supported Sun King, an off-grid solar company, in widening access to affordable solar energy in Nigeria. The transaction demonstrates the bank’s ability to apply sustainable-finance structures to commercially scalable energy access.

Outcome tracking extends to 106,210 trees planted, 257.3 tonnes of wastepaper recycled and alternative-energy solutions deployed at 64 locations in 2025. Such measures give environmental and social objectives operational weight alongside credit discipline.

The evidence indicates a structured approach to sustainable finance that combines governed allocation, client capability and measurable development outcomes. The Capital Finance International (CFI.co) Judging Panel congratulates Stanbic IBTC Bank PLC on winning the Champion of Sustainability-Linked Finance 2026 Award (West Africa).
