BSE Clearing Ltd: Excellence in Central Counterparty Resilience Management India 2026
In June 2026, BSE Clearing ltd, formerly Indian Clearing Corporation Ltd (ICCL), aligned its identity with BSE Ltd, the stock exchange that wholly owns it. The change retained its responsibility for novation and settlement assurance on BSE’s platforms.
A multi-layered margin framework combines value-at-risk, extreme-loss and additional concentration margins with intraday mark-to-market settlement, collateral monitoring, exposure controls and stress safeguards. Back-testing, sensitivity analysis and model reviews support adjustments as conditions change. The architecture distributes risk decisions across complementary defences, including protection against concentrated directional exposures.
Predictive analytics draw on one-minute data snapshots collected since February 2024 across more than 10m active clients. The models identify member behaviour under implied-volatility stress and inform margin and collateral decisions, supporting efficient collateral use alongside appropriate safeguards.
Interoperability has made trade-to-risk latency a central operational consideration. BSE Clearing clears transactions originating on other Indian exchanges and has reduced average latency from trade generation to risk management and collateral allocation to 0.2 seconds. At its disaster-recovery site, with trades travelling about 2,000 kilometres, the 99th percentile remains below one second.
Market-wide contingency planning includes a SAS-based arrangement tested during a dedicated Saturday session. Should another Indian clearing corporation fail, BSE Clearing can assume its risk-management workload alongside its own within 75 minutes. A default insurance cover, settlement guarantee fund and T+0 settlement capability provide further resilience.
These measures demonstrate how governance, technology and tested contingencies can support settlement certainty under routine and stressed conditions. The Capital Finance International (CFI.co) Judging Panel congratulates BSE Clearing ltd on winning the Excellence in Central Counterparty Resilience Management 2026 Award (India).
