General government borrowing and lending by country from 2013 to 2021 (percent of GDP)
Net lending and borrowing are calculated as revenue less total expenditure and the result will show that general government is either (a) putting financial resources at the disposal of other sectors in the economy and non-residents (net lending), or (b) using the resources generated by other sectors and non-residents (net borrowing). This gives an indication of the financial impact of general government activity on the rest of the economy and non-residents.
