Gothenburg claims to be the world’s most sustainable city, and has taken top honours in national and global rankings for its business climate and municipal services. Business Region Göteborg (BRG) — a non-profit wholly owned by the City of Gothenburg — promotes its municipalities as ideal FDI destinations, and the region has a lot to offer. There’s a growing labour market, a well-developed transport and logistics hub, a robust R&D environment, and award-winning performance in smart-city development. Gothenburg is a research hotspot and a test bed for innovative collaboration that has attracted over 30 percent of Sweden’s private sector R&D investments. The region often leads the Global Destination Sustainability Index, and Gothenburg itself was named 2021’s Best Sustainable City Stay by the Lonely Planet guide for its emissions-free construction and green transport systems. Gothenburg has a sustainable past and future: it was the first city in the world to issue green bonds, and it aims to become independent of fossil fuels by 2030. The city expects to hit its €100bn infrastructure investment target by 2035, with a construction programme for bridges and tunnels, housing and hotels. BRG builds on the region’s legacy of skilled labour and cross-sector expertise that allows entrepreneurs to thrive. The CFI.co judging panel names Business Region Göteborg winner of the 2020 award for Best Business Value Creation Destination (Scandinavia).
